Unit 2, Lesson 4 - Good Morning, Digger / What Do Wheels Do All Day?
Our texts this week will help us to understand and answer the question: Why do people use wheels? Our first Focus Story is a Realistic Fiction piece entitled Good Morning, Digger by Anne Rockwell, illustrated by Melanie Hope Greenberg. In this book, boy watches in fascination as construction workers and their tremendous trucks transform a vacant lot into a wonderful new neighborhood center. This story shows the different stages of a building’s construction, from deep hole to its tallest girders—and all the trucks that help along the way!
Our second Focus Story will be What Do Wheels Do All Day? by April Jones Prince, illustrated by Giles Laroche. This story falls into the genre of Informational Text. The author uses 29 different action verbs, along with cut-paper illustrations, to describe the purpose that wheels serve.
Our Target Skills this week will be: blending phonemes, reading rate, synonyms, the relationship between text and graphic features, drawing conclusions, questioning, and numbers as adjectives. We will also be working to identify the letter 'Pp', as well as its corresponding phoneme, /p/.

50's Day for the 50th Day of School!
Here are some pictures from 50's Day this past week! We did several themed activities, but by far, their favorite was the Root Beer float science experiment! :-)

Unit 2, Week 3 - Jonathan and His Mommy / Move!
This week our stories will help us to answer the question: Why do different animals move in different ways? Our first story falls into the genre of Realistic Fiction and is entitled Jonathan and His Mommy--written by Irene Smalls and illustrated by Michael Hays. In this story, a mother and son explore their neighborhood, and, as they do, they try various ways of walking--from giant steps and reggae steps to criss-cross steps and backwards steps.
Our second story this week is Move! by Steve Jenkins and Robin Page. This story is an Informational Text. We will follow a variety of animals as they swing, dance, float, leap, and slide from page to page, and then learn why these animals move the way they do, from the jumping spider who dances to impress and then floats away on a thread of silk, to the roadrunner who flies, but not too far, and would rather run to catch its prey.
Our Focus Skills this week will be blending and segmenting onsets and rimes, reading with expression, identifying key details, comparing and contrasting, visualizing, classifying/categorizing action words, and color words as adjectives. We will also focus on learning the letter Cc and its corresponding phoneme--/k/.
