End of the Year Party Pics
Here are some pics from our End of the Year Party--a series of different outdoor stations, including bubbles, sponge relays, hula hoops, sidewalk chalk, limbo, water fun, walking stilts, face painting, putt-putting, and throwing wet sponges at the teachers faces. The kiddos truly had a blast! However, as I was having sponges thrown at me a majority of the time, I was only able to take a handful of pictures.

The Marriage of Q and U - May 11, 2012
A wedding was held in our classroom yesterday--we joined the letters "Q" and "U" in matrimony, as "Q" is rarely seen without "U" by its side in words of the English language. The mother and father of both the bride and groom were present for the service, as well as a flower girl, a ring bearer, 4 bridesmaids, 4 groomsmen, and 4 ushers. Cake and refreshments were served after the service. The kiddos thoroughly enjoyed it and hopefully, this will help them to remember the concept!

Unit 5, Week 6 - This is the Way We Go to School
This week our Focus Story will be This is the Way We Go to School: A Book About Children Around the World. Through this book we will explore different regions of the world, their climates and physical attributes, and how these characteristics effect the way that children get to school each day. We will discuss how this compares to the way/s that we get to school.
Our Target Skill this week is learning to draw conclusions from evidence within the book (use to clues that the pictures and text give us). We will also continue to make predictions, retell a story, and identify the main idea of a story. We will work to identify, form, and match the letters 'Qq' and 'Yy' to their phonemes--/kw/ and /y/, respectively.

Unit 5, Week 5 - On the Move!
This week our Focus Story will be On the Move! by Donna Latham. This story uses rhyming to describe the many means by which people around the world move from place to place.
Our Target Skill this week is identifying the main idea of a story. We will also continue to practice making predictions, retelling a story, and determining the causes and effects of certain events in a story. Noun recognition and identification will be reviewed as well. We will work to identify, form, and match the letters 'Vv' and 'Zz' to their phonemes--/v/ and /z/, respectively.

Subtraction Bowling
One of the fun ways that we have practiced subtraction over the past few weeks is through the game of bowling. To introduce the concept, we used a big bowling set and bowled for fun as a group. Then we discussed how we could make subtraction sentences to describe our results each time. We know that we will begin with 10 pins. The number of pins that are knocked down is the number that is subtracted or "taken away", and our difference is the number of pins that are left standing. For example, if I knocked down 8 pins, my subtraction sentence would be 10 - 8 = 2. I then divided the children into pairs and gave them a mini bowling set to practice making more subtraction sentences on their own. The kids loved it!

Unit 5, Week 4 - The Little Engine That Could
This week our Focus Story will be The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper. This story is a classic, and is a wonderful means by which to teach children about optimism and the good things that can come as a result of hard work. In this story, a long train must be pulled over the mountain as it has toys and treats for the children there. The dolls and toys try unsuccessfully to find an engine willing to pull their train over the mountain. Finally, a little blue engine (the smallest of them all) decides that she will try to help, and with some hard work and encouragement is successful.
Our Target Skill this week will be learning to identify the plot of a story. We will also continue to practice making predictions, retelling a story, and identifying the characters in a story. We will again focus on learning to identify, form, and match the letter 'Uu' to its phoneme--/u/. This week we will focus on the long vowel sound.
