Unit 1, Week 1 - Building With Dad / What Makes a Family?

Our Read Aloud Book this week will be Building with Dad, written by Carol Nevius and illustrated by Bill Thomson. It falls into the category of Realistic Fiction.  In this story, Dad is helping to build a new school, and his son tags along to watch the progress.  They see lots of machines at work: a dump truck, a backhoe, an earthmover, a giant grader, a steamroller, a cement mixer, a crane, and more.  The building is finished just in time for the first day of school!
Our Informational Text this week will be What Makes a Family?, by Pam Munoz Ryan.  This book is about different families and the things they do together.
We will be working on the following skills this week: rhyming words, reading with expression, identifying the main idea of a story, summarizing a story, identifying people as nouns, and learning to classify and categorize 'family' words.
