A Visit from a Policeman!
On Friday, a policeman came to visit us! Ms. Batte had to leave while the students were in their Related Arts class to go to a meeting at Benny Bills Elementary in Gallatin, but Mrs. Hines took a few photos of the kiddos for me. I know that I will hear all about it on Monday! The students had been really looking forward to this visitor!

A Visit from a Baker
On Wednesday, Mrs. Sadler, a local baker, came by to pay us a visit. She talked about all of the foods typically found at a bakery and her specialty--cakes. She taught us all of the basic ingredients in a typical cake, then showed us pictures of cakes that she has made. She finished with a surprise--she left us with cupcake coloring sheets for each classroom, and the classroom who "decorates" these cupcakes the best will receive real cupcakes from her on Halloween!
A Visit from the Postman!
On Tuesday, Mr. Estes, a postman in Portland, came to visit us and talk to us about what it means to work at the Post Office. He showed us examples of new stamps and walked us through a typical day for him. He even brought his mail jeep by the school for us to see!

A Visit from the Fire Dept.
To go along with our Reading Focus Story--Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip with Kindergarten--we will have several special guests coming to talk to us this week. In our story, Miss Bindergarten takes her class on a Field trip to visit the locations of several Community Helpers (the Fire Department, Library, Post Office, etc.) We have arranged for several of these Community Helpers to come visit us this week.
On Monday, we had a visit from the Mitchellville Fire Department. Firemen Chris and Taffy taught us many things about the duties of a fireman and fire safety. They also brought a fire truck with them and let us look at all the special tools that firemen keep on their trucks, explaining their purpose to us. We got a chance to hear the siren up close, and have our picture taken with the firemen as well! Thank you, Firemen Chris and Taffy!

Mosaic Name project with 3rd graders
Last Tuesday, we were lucky enough to have the wonderful Kim Sutton visit our school. She met with 3rd-5th grade teachers in the morning and K-2nd grade teachers in the afternoon. While the 3rd, 4th, and 5th teachers were in their meeting, their classes were paired up with a K, 1st, or 2nd grade classroom, and then we swapped in the afternoon; Miss Mitchell's wonderful 3rd graders spent the morning with us, and our class spent the afternoon with her so that I could attend the meeting. Though a little crowded, we had a blast! Below are examples of an activity that the 3rd graders helped us with (each child in my class was paired with a "buddy" in Miss Mitchell's class)--a mosaic tile name project. I think they turned out pretty cool!

Our target Comprehension Skill this week will be sequencing, or putting things in order of what happened first, next, and last. Green Day Treat Pics!
The kiddos really enjoyed learning that the colors blue and yellow, when mixed together, make green. We performed a "Walking Water" experiment (shown below) and then took turns combining yellow and blue food coloring with white icing to make green icing...which we used to top sugar cookies for our Green Day snack!
